28/2 - Transferable skills - how to transfer your academic skills into industry terminology - Malmö

Working in the academia as a PhD student, Postdoc or Researcher is versatile and challenging but it is also a training aiming for an academic career. Many of the skills you learn in the academia are valued and very useful in the industry. During the seminar you will learn which of these skills are assets for you and how they be transformed into industry skills. You will also learn what companies in the industry values.

Example of skill sets you learn in the academia are: making new discoveries, setting up new projects, writing scientific articles, editing manuscripts, conducting experiments and collecting data. In addition, you have learned to focus on results and summarizing your results in articles as well as presenting these results at conferences. You can also be responsible for teaching and supervising.
How can theses skills be transformed so companies in the industry understand what you can perform and contribute with? The trick is to learn how to articulate and translate your academic skill set and describe your drive and motivation. In the seminar you will learn what companies´ value from your academic training. You will also get a better understanding of job titles connected to particular transferable skills. Which of these skills are assets for you and how can they be transformed into industry skills? Learning the language used in the industry is also very important.

• What transferable skills are transferable skills (TS)
• Why it is important to work on TS
• Strategies to identify your TS
• Learn to understand industry job adverts and matching your TS
• Your CV and LinkedIn profile and adding TS to increase attention

Goal
This seminar is targeted towards PHD students, Postdocs and researchers who is interested in having a career in the industry. After attending this seminar you will be able to present yourself and your skills to the industry, write an attractive CV understood by recruiters and hiring managers as well as producing an attractive LinkedIn profile. You will also be better prepared in explaining and motivating why you are the right person for the job.
